One of the most important parts of clipping is the preparation!

your horse or pony must be clean and dry but what does that mean?

• Ideally bath your horse the day before
• If you cannot bath your horse you must do a deep groom for about an hour, if you are not working up a sweat you are not getting the dirt and grease out!
• rug your horse so it has no chance of getting accidentally wet!

A dirty or wet coat will hurt your horse when clipped

Clip Art is a fun way to express yourself and your horse's personality. I prefer to have prior knowledge of your intention to have clip art but if there is enough time I do have a selection of things I can do without planning, such as hearts, stars, shamrock to name a few.

A couple of things to consider:

• I am doing a design in hair that goes in lots of directions
• your horse must be capable of standing still whilst it is done

Horses are not born accepting being clipped, some take to it better than others. Some have areas that they are not keen on being worked on, either due to the way they were introduced to clipping or through a pain memory associated with clipping an area.

Sometimes I will give you homework in preparation of my visit if your horse requires it. Sometimes I will ask you to continue working on a problem behaviour to help the horse overcome its fear.

In the same way that coat preparation is key for a good clip, so is the mental preparation for the horse. 

If I feel it is an issue that you may find difficult overcoming on your own, I may suggest specific clipping training that I can come out and do with your horse.
